SCOTTISH ROCKS were the final casualties in an opening weekend of shock results as the new British Basketball League season got under way. The Glasgow-based title hopefuls went down 95-91 at home to Guildford Heat last night, just two days after Newcastle Eagles, last seasons winners, were defeated by Sheffield.

The Kent State men's basketball team will open its 2006-2007 season Nov. 10 against South Dakota State in a tournament in Columbus, where it has a chance to meet the nationally ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. The Flashes will also travel to Cameron Indoor Stadium to play Duke for a game that will be nationally televised on ESPN Dec. 19. Kent State could be playing as many as seven postseason teams from last year, according to a press release issued Friday by the Kent State Athletic Department. "We have a very competitive schedule again this season," said fifth-year coach Jim Christian in the press release. "We play in a lot of difficult environments early in the season which will present some very strong challenges for our team." Last year the Flashes won the Mid-American Conference Tournament and made their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2002, losing to Pittsburgh 79-64 in the first round.

The Big Ten announced on Thursday that at least 32 women's basketball games will be either nationally or regionally televised for the 2006-2007 season. Purdue will have five games televised, four on ESPN2 and the fifth on Comcast SportsNet Chicago. The Boilers will play two road games and two home games that will air on ESPN2. The Boilers travel to Connecticut for a game at 7 p.m., on Nov. 20 and at 3 p.m. on Jan. 7 at Texas. ESPN2 will also televise the home games when the Boilers host Ohio State at 7 p.m., on Jan. 29 and Michigan State at 3:10 p.m., on Feb. 11. Comcast will televise the Boilers home game against Indiana, which is at 3 p.m., on Jan. 14.
